John has a private practice in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, NC as a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT), AAMFT Approved Supervisor, and Certified DBT Clinician (DBT-Linehan Board of Certification). He has completed DBT Intensive training and is on the Leadership Team of Triangle Area Dialectical Therapy (founded by Meggan Moorhead and Norma Safransky). He has taught DBT Skills Training Groups (beg 1997), DBT Family Skills Training (beg 2004), and DBT Skills for Couples (beg 2008), as well as NCAMFT Pre-Conference Institutes. He leads a DBT Consultation Training Team and has led workshops in North Carolina and in New York on Compassionate Self-Care for Caregivers drawing on skills from DBT, ACT, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Behavioral Activation and Buddhist Psychology. John has training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, including the Founders' Boot Camp in Reno, NV.

​John has provided Family Therapy Supervision and Training Groups as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, has taught Family Therapy at North Carolina Central University School of Education and worked for 18 years in a community mental health center. The North Carolina Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, Triangle Area DBT, and OPC Area Program have recognized him for his contributions to the profession.
